Martens are nocturnal animals and flexible in their food intake. Houses, barns in towns and villages as well as warm places such as garages or engine rooms are among the preferred places where martens live, where they cause considerable damage.
If you have a marten in the attic at home, night quickly turns into day, the rodents scratch and destroy everything that is not firmly anchored. Flower pots are emptied and knocked over and even the chickens are no longer safe.
Especially in cities where there are few opportunities for martens to take shelter, they often look for engine rooms as a warm resting place. In many cases, martens cause considerable damage to the car by biting through fuel, brake, hydraulic lines or ignition cables. A marten leaves scent traces, which other martens react to aggressively and bite cables and wires. The problems of chewed cables therefore often occur when relocating to another marten territory or at territory borders.
The mating season begins in late June. That is why the territorial fights reach their peak in May, when the male martens are most aggressive.
